Thinking of Adding Battery Storage to Your Solar Panels?

Back to all insights

Here’s everything Northern Ireland homeowners need to know, including why the myenergi libbi is the storage system we trust.

If you already have  solar panels in Northern Ireland, you’re already saving money. But here’s the thing, most solar-only homes use less than 40% of the electricity they generate. The rest goes back to the grid, often for a fraction of what you paid for it. Battery storage changes that equation completely.

And if you’re still weighing up solar panels for your home and haven’t installed yet, adding a battery from day one is one of the smartest decisions you can make.

At Solar Power NI, we’ve been helping homeowners across Northern Ireland get more from their solar investment since day one. We’re proud to be Northern Ireland’s leading installer of the myenergi libbi, and in this guide, we’ll explain exactly why battery storage is becoming an essential part of every solar setup in NI.

Why Is Battery Storage So Important for Solar Panels in Northern Ireland?

Northern Ireland has a surprisingly good solar resource, modern panels generate electricity from daylight, not just direct sunshine. But our weather does mean your panels will generate the most power between 9am and 5pm, when many households are at work or school.

Without battery storage, that surplus energy flows back to the grid via the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) typically earning you just a few pence per unit. Then, when you need electricity in the evening, you’re buying it back from the grid at the full rate. A home battery storage system breaks that cycle.

The self-consumption jump: Adding battery storage to your solar PV system typically increases the proportion of your own solar energy you actually use from around 30–40% to 70–80%. That’s a dramatic reduction in your grid electricity bills.

With rising energy costs showing no sign of reversing, solar battery storage in Northern Ireland is now one of the most financially sound home energy investments available. A typical 3-bedroom home with a 4.5kW solar system and battery storage can save around £826 a year on energy bills.

How Does the myenergi libbi Work with Solar Panels?

The libbi is a hybrid inverter and battery storage system combined. During the day, your domestic solar panels generate electricity. The libbi captures any surplus, energy you’d otherwise export for a few pence per unit, and stores it in its battery modules.

In the evening, when your solar panels stop generating, the libbi automatically discharges that stored electricity into your home. You’re running on your own free solar energy, not expensive grid electricity.

The system also has a clever grid-charging mode: if you’re on a time-of-use tariff (where electricity is cheaper overnight), the libbi can top itself up during off-peak hours and use that stored power during expensive daytime peaks. For households without solar, this alone can generate meaningful savings.

💡 Already have solar panels? The myenergi libbi is compatible with all existing solar PV systems and can be retrofitted to your home you don’t need to have bought your solar panels from us. Get in touch to find out if your system is libbi-ready.

⚡ Good news for hybrid inverter owners
Already have a hybrid inverter? You could add battery storage today.

If your solar panels are connected to a hybrid inverter, a battery can often be added straight to your existing setup — making the upgrade quicker and more affordable than you think.

What Size Battery Do I Need for My Northern Ireland Home?

The libbi is available in multiples of 5kWh modules, with a maximum of four modules giving you up to 20kWh of total storage. Most Northern Ireland households will find a good fit with:

  • 5kWh libbi — ideal for smaller households (1–2 bed) or as a starting point
  • 10kWh libbi — suits most 3-bedroom family homes in NI, covering evening and morning demand
  • 15–20kWh libbi — larger homes, high energy users, or those with an EV charger

The average Northern Ireland household uses between 10–20kWh of electricity per day. A 10kWh battery paired with a well-sized solar array typically covers all of your evening and overnight energy needs in summer, with solid contribution year-round.

Our team will survey your home, review your current energy usage and solar system size, and recommend the right libbi configuration for your specific situation. Every installation is different, we don’t do one-size-fits-all.

How Much Can You Save with Solar Battery Storage in NI?

Adding battery storage to a solar system in Northern Ireland can increase your monthly savings by 20–50% compared to solar panels alone. Here’s what the numbers look like in practice:

  • Solar panels only: typically 30–40% self-consumption of generated electricity
  • Solar + battery storage: typically 70–80% self-consumption
  • Average 3-bed NI home saving: approximately £826 per year with solar + battery
  • Larger homes: savings up to £1,567 per year or more
  • Battery storage can raise lifetime system savings to £20,000–£30,000 over 25 years

⚠️ VAT benefit: Solar battery storage systems qualify for 0% VAT when installed alongside solar panels in Northern Ireland by a VAT-registered installer like Solar Power NI, reducing your upfront investment significantly.

The myenergi Ecosystem: More Than Just a Battery

One of the biggest advantages of the libbi isn’t the battery itself, it’s the myenergi ecosystem it belongs to. If you have (or plan to add) an electric vehicle, the myenergi zappi EV charger integrates directly with the libbi, allowing you to prioritise charging your car from stored solar, not the grid.

Similarly, the myenergi eddi hot water diverter can redirect surplus solar into your immersion heater, giving you free hot water from energy that would otherwise be exported. All three devices libbi, zappi and eddi are controlled through a single myenergi app, giving you a complete picture of your home’s energy flows in real time.
