0% VAT on Solar Panels in Northern Ireland Ends March 2027: Don’t Miss Out

Back to all insights

If you’ve been thinking about solar panels or battery storage for your home, there’s a date worth putting in your diary. 0% VAT on solar panels in Northern Ireland ends on 31 March 2027.

Right now, homeowners pay 0% VAT on the supply and installation of solar panels and battery storage. From 1 April 2027, that changes, and VAT on residential solar installations is set to return to 5%.

In this guide, we explain what the change means, what’s covered, and why now is the right time to book your solar panel installation in Northern Ireland.

What is 0% VAT on solar panels?

The 0% VAT rate is a government tax relief on the installation of energy-saving materials in homes. Solar panels and solar battery storage both qualify.

The relief was introduced in England, Scotland and Wales in April 2022. Following the Windsor Framework agreement, it was extended to Northern Ireland on 1 May 2023, according to the House of Commons Library.

When does 0% VAT on solar panels in Northern Ireland end?

The 0% VAT rate is legislated to end on 31 March 2027. From 1 April 2027, VAT on solar panels and batteries for homes is set to return to the reduced rate of 5%.

The government hasn’t announced any plans to extend the relief. Homeowners should plan around the March 2027 deadline.

What does the 5% VAT rise mean for you?

In simple terms, the same solar system will cost more after 1 April 2027.

For example, on a solar and battery system costing £8,000, 5% VAT would add around £400 to the price. On a larger system with more panels and extra battery storage, the difference is even bigger.

Once 0% VAT on solar panels in Northern Ireland ends, the cost of going solar will rise for every homeowner.

What’s covered by 0% VAT on solar panels in Northern Ireland?

The 0% rate applies to the whole installed price of a qualifying system, not just the equipment:

  • Solar panels
  • Inverters
  • Battery storage
  • Cabling and fittings
  • Labour and installation

There are a few important conditions:

  • It’s for homes only. The relief applies to residential properties. Commercial and agricultural solar installations aren’t covered.
  • Supply and installation must come from the same company. If you buy panels from one supplier and have them fitted by someone else, the 0% rate doesn’t apply. At Solar Power NI, we supply and install everything ourselves.

Why you should book your solar panel installation in Northern Ireland now

It’s easy to think 31 March 2027 is a long way off. But a quality solar panel installation isn’t something that happens overnight. Every system goes through a few stages first:

  1. Initial enquiry and free home survey: we look at your roof, your energy use and your goals.
  2. System design and quote: your system is sized around how your household actually uses electricity.
  3. Grid application: larger systems may need approval from NIE Networks before connection. Read our guide to the G99/NI Fast Track changes.
  4. Installation and commissioning: your panels, battery and inverter are fitted and switched on.

From first enquiry to switch-on can take a few months. As the deadline gets closer, demand for solar panels across Northern Ireland will rise and installation diaries will fill up. Enquiring early means you get the date that suits you, with no last-minute rush. The sooner you enquire, the more time you have to benefit from 0% VAT on solar panels in Northern Ireland.

Solar still makes sense beyond the VAT saving

The VAT saving is a great reason to act now, but it isn’t the only one. With electricity prices rising again, more homeowners are turning to solar to take control of their energy bills.

Adding battery storage lets you store the solar energy you generate during the day and use it in the evening, when you need it most. Solar works all year round in Northern Ireland too. Even in the wettest month in 150 years, solar cut one of our customers’ electricity bills by 62.3%.

What to do now: get your electricity bills ready

To get the most accurate quote, have these details to hand when you get in touch:

  • Your last 12 months of electricity bills
  • Your yearly electricity usage in kWh
  • Your unit rate and standing charge
  • Your tariff type, for example Economy 7
  • Any future plans, such as an electric car or heat pump
