What grants, incentives or subsidies are available in Northern Ireland?

Back to all insights

If you’re weighing up solar panels in Northern Ireland, the big question is: what help is out there? Here’s the honest picture — and how we help you make the most of it.

Export payments (not SEG, but supplier export in NI)

Unlike Great Britain, the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) doesn’t apply in Northern Ireland. However, some NI suppliers offer their own export rates for microgeneration. For example, Power NI’s current published export tariff is 9.64p/kWh (Oct 2025–Sep 2026). That means you’re paid for any surplus you send back to the grid, a useful boost to payback. 0% VAT on installation (until 31 March 2027)

Residential installations of qualifying energy-saving materials, including solar PV and many batteries, are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, with a planned reversion to 5% afterwards. The Windsor Framework extended this relief to Northern Ireland from May 2023. In plain English: installation is tax-free right now, reducing your upfront cost. GOV.UK

NISEP-backed grants for businesses and farms

There’s no current domestic grant scheme specific to solar, but commercial customers can access 20% funding via programmes delivered by Power NI under the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme (NISEP). We’ve written up how that works for businesses and agricultural sites, including eligibility and the “Grant Offer Letter” steps. Solar Power NI

Our take

Even without a household grant, NI homeowners still stack strong benefits: supplier export, 0% VAT until 2027, and long-life panels that keep producing for decades. We keep our blog updated with funding explainers and export guidance, start here: Grants & Funding for Solar in NI. Solar Power NI
