VAT free solar panels

Back to all insights

Unleash the power of the sun and save big with 0% on all solar panels!

Get ready for an incredible opportunity to save money while contributing to a greener future! Solar Power NI is thrilled to announce that, as of May 1st 2023, the Northern Ireland Government has slashed VAT on energy-saving materials (ESMs) for residential properties in NI to an astonishing 0%! This fantastic initiative aims to boost the adoption of ESMs, supporting the government’s net-zero objectives.

🌟 Summary of exciting changes:

  • Massive VAT reduction on domestic energy efficiency and renewable energy installations, including solar, from 5-20% to 0% in Northern Ireland.
  • The average homeowner will save around £1,000 on a PV system install.
  • Along with savings of at least £300 a year on electricity prices.

💡 What does this mean for your solar system?

Solar thermal and PV systems are included in the list of ESMs, so their supply and installation now come with 0% VAT in Northern Ireland from 1st May 2023.

Up to this point in Northern Ireland, solar systems are subject to 20% VAT, but often a reduced rate of 5% may apply if specific social conditions are met, or if the ‘60% test’ is satisfied.

🌍 The impact of this incredible offer

Great Britain and Northern Ireland are striving to reach net-zero by 2050, which means that 29 million homes need to be decarbonised to provide clean, affordable energy. This change in VAT will encourage the deployment of domestic low-carbon technologies, energy efficiency measures, and retrofitting homes with solar PV and solar thermal systems.

It’s already a great financial decision to choose residential solar, and this VAT reduction only sweetens the deal.

📣 Solar Power NI’s take on the recent announcement

  • All solar and energy storage installations, including maintenance, should have a 0% VAT rate, including standalone residential energy storage.
  • The government should consult with the low-carbon industry to design a long-term retrofit support scheme for homeowners and occupiers, running until at least 2030.
  • Building regulations should incentivise onsite solar generation and energy storage, with a Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) methodology that keeps pace with advancing technology.
  • 0% VAT is only applied with the installation of solar. If you get battery storage installed at the time of the solar install, 0% will also apply on the batteries. However, if you choose to get batteries at a later date (not with solar installation), then 20% VAT will be applied.

Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to save money and contribute to a greener future with Solar Power NI!
