How to maintain your solar panels: a simple guide

Back to all insights

Solar panels are a valuable investment that can provide you with renewable energy for over 25 years. To ensure the optimal performance and longevity of your solar panels, proper maintenance is essential. In this guide, we will outline the key steps and best practices for maintaining your solar panels. At Solar Power NI, we understand the importance of keeping your solar panels in peak condition to maximise energy generation and savings.

Regular visual inspection

Perform regular visual inspections of your solar panels to identify any issues or signs of damage. Look for dirt buildup, debris, or loose components. While rainfall can naturally clean the panels in most areas of Ireland, some regions may experience a slightly more significant buildup of grime and dust. If you notice any significant accumulation, it’s recommended to clean the panels more frequently.

Cleaning your solar panels

Cleaning your solar panels is crucial for their optimal performance. Generally, cleaning them two to four times per year is recommended.

Here’s how to clean your solar panels effectively:

Tilted Panels
If your panels are tilted, rainfall will wash away most debris and dust. However, during dry seasons or extended periods without rain, manual cleaning becomes necessary. Depending on access restrictions due to the location of your solar panels, you can use a leaf blower to blast away debris or a garden hose to rinse them. It is highly recommended that lukewarm water should be used for cleaning after heavy snowfall during winter. Avoid using hot water, as the temperature disparity can crack the panels.

Ground-level cleaning
Cleaning from the ground is the safest approach. Use a long-handled implement, such as a soft brush, to remove loose materials before rinsing with water. Avoid using metal objects or harsh abrasive products that can scratch the glass and affect panel performance. Many window cleaning companies are now branching out into cleaning solar panels also, so you don’t need to worry about accessing your roof space and cleaning these yourself.

Repair and replacement

If your solar panels require repair or replacement, it’s crucial to involve professionals. Contact your solar panel installation company if your panels are under warranty or experiencing efficiency issues. They will send technicians to assess the situation and carry out necessary repairs or replacements. For physical damages covered by homeowners’ insurance, check the coverage details and file a claim accordingly.

Inverter servicing

Solar inverters play a vital role in converting solar energy into usable electricity. While inverters generally have a lifespan of 5 to 10 years, regular servicing enhances their efficiency. Follow these steps for inverter maintenance:

Inverter cleaning
Regularly wipe the inverter to remove any accumulating dust, debris, or cobwebs. Ensure proper airflow around the inverter by avoiding covering or limiting the clearance space.

Air intake filter
In dusty areas, professional cleaning of the air intake filter may be necessary to maintain optimal performance. Seek assistance from a technician for this task.

Error codes
Monitor your inverter for error codes or unusual lights. If you notice any abnormal indications, contact a professional to diagnose and resolve the issue.

Maintaining your solar panels is vital to ensure their longevity and optimal energy generation. By following these maintenance practices, including regular visual inspections, proper cleaning, professional maintenance services, and addressing any repairs or replacements promptly, you can maximise the efficiency and lifespan of your solar panel system.
