How do solar panels work with battery storage?

Back to all insights

Whether you’re a current owner of solar panels or considering installing them, you might have concerns about potential power shortages. The thought of navigating through a dark evening following a cloudy day, or struggling to brew a cup of tea in chilly weather, can be daunting.

An alternative is to draw electricity from the utility grid, but for those who’ve opted for solar panels to cut costs or reduce environmental impact, this might feel contradictory. This is where a battery storage system, such as libbi or BYD storage, comes into play. It not only alleviates these concerns but also maximizes your solar investment.

Why consider battery storage?

Even in places like Ireland, where sunny days are not overly common, solar panels remain effective. They can provide sufficient energy for your home even on overcast days.

However, what happens on the days when sunlight is abundant and your panels produce surplus electricity? Without a storage system, this extra energy is returned to the grid for very little reward to the owner, essentially being wasted.

While it might seem beneficial to contribute surplus energy to the grid, supporting your neighbors and renewable initiatives, it doesn’t provide help during heavy rain or nighttime when solar production drops. Here, relying on grid power could be costly and less eco-friendly.

A robust battery storage system significantly enhances your energy independence. Systems like libbi store the excess energy, allowing you to access it as needed.

How does a battery storage system function?

The process involves several technical components, distilled into six straightforward steps:

Energy Conversion: Solar panels convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity at an atomic level, unnoticed by the naked eye.

Inverter: To make the DC electricity usable for home appliances, it’s converted into alternating current (AC) using an inverter. This device rapidly alternates the direction of the DC.

Charge Controller: This device ensures the battery charges at the optimal rate, enhancing battery lifespan by regulating voltage.

Battery Charging: Similar to other rechargeable devices, the battery charges to prepare for future use.

Battery Discharging: When solar panels underproduce, the stored energy is used to power your home. For instance, a fully charged 5kWh unit by libbi can support up to 89 hours of television.

Battery Management System (BMS): This crucial component protects against overcharging, over-discharging, and other potential hazards, while providing essential battery status information for informed energy management.

Why we love libbi

Here at Solar Power NI, we have a lot of love for the libbi battery storage system. libbi features a modular design that lets you tailor storage capacity to your needs, enhancing your solar panel efficiency. Its adaptability ensures your home’s future readiness, with options to modify capacity as required.

If you’re using other myenergi products like zappi for EV charging, libbi is the perfect complement. It integrates seamlessly with all myenergi solutions, including eddi, which redirects excess solar energy for water heating.

Thanks to its sophisticated battery management system, libbi consistently operates at optimal efficiency, extending its lifespan and ensuring peak performance.

Monitor your energy consumption, battery levels, and solar output in real-time with the myenergi app, enabling well-informed energy decisions and full utilization of your solar power.
