Farm Smarter with Solar: 20% Grant Now Available for Northern Ireland Farmers

Back to all insights

Running a modern farm comes with rising energy costs — especially for intensive operations like dairy, pig, and poultry. But a new grant from Power NI is making it easier than ever for farmers to cut bills and take control of their energy.

As part of the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme (NISEP), Power NI is now offering 20% funding towards fully installed solar PV systems for agricultural businesses — and Solar Power NI is here to help you make the most of it.

What’s the agricultural solar grant?

This new agricultural solar grant covers 20% of the cost of a solar installation (excluding VAT), including both panels and installation work — up to a maximum of £30,000 per site.

That means serious savings for farms with high energy use — and faster returns on your investment.

⚠️ Note: The grant doesn’t cover battery storage or projects designed primarily for export — it’s aimed at farms using solar for on-site consumption.

Who’s eligible for the agricultural solar grant?

If you’re a dairy, pig, or poultry farmer — or any type of commercial farm in Northern Ireland — and your site is non-domestic (i.e., not connected to a domestic electricity meter), you’re likely eligible. No new builds or farmhouses — just active agricultural businesses.

How does the solar grant work?

  1. Farm Assessment – We’ll carry out a tailored site audit to assess your energy needs and quote for the right-sized system.
  2. Apply to Power NI – You submit the official application to Power NI (we’ll guide you through it).
  3. Get approval – Once you receive your Grant Offer Letter (valid for 3 months), you’re clear to go ahead.
  4. Installation – Our team installs your solar system to MCS standards.
  5. Claim your grant – Submit proof of payment and documents — and receive your 20% grant via bank transfer.

⚠️ Important: You must not pay a deposit or start the installation before receiving your Grant Offer Letter, or you risk losing the grant.

Why farmers are going solar

For energy-heavy farm operations, solar is a game-changer:

  • Lower your electricity bills long-term
  • Protect against rising energy prices
  • Improve your sustainability credentials and environmental compliance
  • Boost energy independence — power your sheds, parlours, cold stores and more

Why choose Solar Power NI?

We’ve been Northern Ireland’s trusted solar experts since 2010 — helping farms across the country cut energy costs and boost efficiency. We’re fully MCS certified, Power NI-approved, and handle everything from quote to claim with no nonsense.

Don’t wait — funding is limited.
