New solar power Grants for businesses in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland businesses seeking to reduce energy costs and build resilience through efficiency have a new opportunity to access funding. The Energy Efficiency Capital Grant (EECG) programme offers support for buying and installing energy-efficient equipment to reduce energy and carbon emissions. Here’s what you need to know about this exciting grant and how it can benefit your business.

What is the Energy Efficiency Capital Grant (EECG)?

The EECG is a new grant scheme designed to support Northern Ireland businesses in reducing their energy consumption and carbon emissions. It provides financial assistance for purchasing and installing energy-efficient equipment, allowing businesses to make significant changes in their energy use.

This grant programme is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The call for applications opens on Monday, 29 April 2024, at 12:00 noon. Make sure to mark your calendar, as this could be a significant opportunity for your business to improve its energy efficiency.

How much support can my business get?

Grants of up to £150,000 are available, with the level of support depending on your company’s size and the total eligible project costs. Here’s the breakdown of support based on company size:

  • Large Businesses: Maximum of 30% support
  • Medium Businesses: Maximum of 40% support
  • Small & Micro Businesses: Maximum of 50% support
This grant covers a wide range of energy-efficient equipment, including:
  • Heating and cooling equipment
  • Motors and drives
  • Compressed air systems
  • Lighting
  • Onsite renewable generation, like solar power installations

Is your business eligible?

To qualify for the grant, your business must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a registered company based in Northern Ireland
  • Have been trading for at least two years
  • Implement the project at premises registered for business rates with Land and Property Services
  • Own these premises, or have a rental agreement that extends beyond the project’s payback period
  • Additionally, some business exclusions apply, so it’s important to review the full eligibility requirements before applying.

Is your project eligible?

  • Projects seeking funding must meet certain criteria, including:
  • A total eligible spend of at least £4,000
  • Demonstrated energy and carbon emission savings, with specific targets depending on the project type
  • A payback period of between 1 and 8 years (a higher payback period might be allowed, but these projects require higher energy and carbon savings)

How to Apply

If your business meets the eligibility criteria and you’re interested in pursuing this grant, the application process opens on Monday, 29 April 2024. This grant can be an excellent opportunity to enhance your business’s sustainability and energy efficiency.

With this grant, Northern Ireland businesses can take significant steps towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
