Can I get a grant for solar panels?
There are no domestic incentives for solar panels currently available in Northern Ireland, and that position is not going to alter any time soon.
However, businesses can apply for funding for up to 20% of the value of their solar system installation.
However, as of 1st May 2023, solar panels are now available with 0% VAT. Which is roughly a saving of £1,000 on your installation and a saving of £500 a year on electricity bills.
Are solar panels worth it?
There has never been a better time to install solar panels on your premises because they make excellent investments. Commercial solar panels currently have a payback period of less than three years, and domestic residences are experiencing an electricity bill decrease of more than 50%.
There is currently no indication that the government will offer a grant to anyone adopting solar panels in the near future. However, the 0% VAT saving reduces your cost by around £1,000 and can reduce the pay-back period by 1 year!
Based on an upfront investment as little as £4,999, your property can be nearly ‘bill-free’ in a matter of 4-5 years.

Solar panel grants for businesses
The Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme for 2024/2025 is expanding to offer grants of up to 20% to all businesses in Northern Ireland for the installation of green technologies.
The funding for 24/25 is currently available to register interest, more details will be sent as to when applications are officially open. You can register your interest on the Solar NI website.
